A Spaghetti Diagram is a simple Lean tool used to trace the actual movement of people, materials, or information through a process.
The path is drawn on a layout or floor plan. When the route crosses back and forth repeatedly, the drawing often begins to look like a plate of spaghetti.

What the diagram reveals

These are often forms of Motion or Transportation waste from the 8 Wastes of Lean.
Map the actual route
Do not draw the route from memory.
Observe the real process. Follow the operator, material, document, or transaction and record each movement.
This is a practical application of Gemba: understand the actual condition before redesigning it.
Choose one subject at a time
A Spaghetti Diagram becomes confusing if too many flows are combined.
Choose a clear subject such as one operator, one product family, one material, one document, or one service transaction.
If multiple flows matter, create separate maps first.
Add distance or frequency
The diagram becomes more useful when movement is quantified.
Useful data includes total distance, number of trips, time spent walking, frequency per shift, and number of handoffs.
For example, if an operator walks 25 meters to retrieve labels 40 times per shift, the issue becomes measurable.
Improve the layout
The future-state question is simple:
Can the work be arranged so the required sequence is easier and unnecessary travel is reduced?
Potential actions include moving tools closer, point-of-use storage, relocating materials, changing workstation arrangement, combining steps, and improving information access.
This often connects with 5S, because Set in Order should place items where the work actually needs them.

Common mistakes
