It does not mean transferring all maintenance work to operators.

Begin by restoring basic conditions
Equipment often accumulates leaks, contamination, loose hardware, inaccessible inspection points and temporary fixes.
Initial cleaning is therefore not just housekeeping.
As operators and maintenance personnel clean the equipment, they can expose conditions that were previously hidden.
Abnormalities should be tagged, prioritized and corrected rather than simply cleaned around.
Eliminate sources of contamination and difficult access
If equipment becomes dirty immediately after cleaning, the team should investigate why.
Oil leaks, dust entry, poor guarding or difficult lubrication points can make basic care unsustainable.

Create standards for basic care
Operators need clear expectations.
Standards may define what to clean, inspect, lubricate or tighten, how often the task occurs, what normal looks like and what condition requires escalation.
Visual standards can make missing bolts, low fluid levels, leaks or unusual wear easier to recognize.
Develop inspection capability
Autonomous Maintenance becomes more valuable when operators understand why the checks matter.
Training can help people recognize abnormal sound, heat, vibration, wear, contamination or changes in machine behavior.
The operator is not expected to diagnose every failure.
The objective is earlier detection and faster escalation.
Clarify the boundary with maintenance
A healthy system defines who is responsible for which task.
Simple inspection or lubrication may belong with operations, while technical adjustment or component replacement belongs with maintenance.
Ambiguous boundaries can create unsafe work or neglected tasks.
Responsibility should be based on capability, risk and the maintenance strategy.
Measure the condition, not just task completion
Completing every cleaning checklist does not guarantee reliability.
The team should examine whether abnormalities are being found earlier, whether basic conditions are improving and whether equipment losses are decreasing.
The routine should produce better equipment behavior.

One mistake is launching Autonomous Maintenance as a cleaning campaign.
Another is using it primarily to reduce maintenance staffing.
A third is giving operators maintenance tasks without sufficient training or safe access.
Autonomous Maintenance succeeds when it creates shared ownership of equipment condition, strengthens abnormality detection and allows maintenance specialists to focus more of their effort on technical reliability work.
