MTBF, Mean Time Between Failures, focuses on the time between repairable failures.
MTTR, Mean Time to Repair, commonly focuses on the average time required to restore the equipment after failure.
Used together, they help distinguish how often equipment fails from how long recovery takes.
How MTBF is calculated
A common form is:
MTBF = operating time / number of failures
If a machine operates for 1,000 hours and experiences five defined failures, the MTBF is 200 operating hours.
The result depends heavily on what the organization counts as a failure and what time is included as operating time.
Those definitions should be consistent.
How MTTR is calculated
A common form is:
MTTR = total repair time / number of repairs
If five repairs require a combined 10 hours, the MTTR is two hours.
Organizations should define when repair time starts and ends.
Some measure hands-on technical repair only. Others include diagnosis, waiting for parts or access delay.
The definition should match the management question.
Reliability versus maintainability
MTBF is mainly associated with reliability.
A rising MTBF generally indicates that failures are occurring less frequently under comparable conditions.
MTTR is associated with maintainability and recovery.
A falling MTTR can indicate faster diagnosis, better access, improved repair methods, stronger spare-parts support or clearer troubleshooting standards.
The same downtime can come from different patterns
Two machines can lose the same total hours while requiring different improvement strategies.
One may fail frequently but recover quickly.
Another may fail rarely but require a very long repair.
The first may need stronger failure prevention. The second may need better maintainability, spares or diagnostic capability.
MTBF and MTTR help make that distinction visible.
Use failure definitions carefully
Minor stops, adjustments and planned maintenance should not be mixed into the measure unless the organization has intentionally defined them that way.
Changes in data collection can create an apparent reliability improvement without changing the equipment.
Consistent definitions are essential for trend analysis.
MTBF is not a prediction of exact life
An MTBF of 500 hours does not mean the equipment will fail exactly every 500 hours.
It is an average based on the defined population and period.
Failure distributions can vary widely.
For critical reliability decisions, teams may need deeper analysis such as Weibull methods, condition monitoring or failure-mode analysis.
Connect the metric to action
MTBF should lead teams toward recurring failure modes and prevention.
MTTR should lead toward repair preparation, troubleshooting, access, skills, tooling and spare-parts improvement.
The measures are useful when they guide investigation.
They are weak when they are treated only as maintenance scorecard numbers.
MTBF and MTTR answer different questions, and using both gives a more complete picture of equipment reliability performance.
